Here's a quick review of the different features of paintball gun barrels.

(1) Barrel Length - Marker barrels come in lengths from 3 to 22 inches and can change the function of your paintball gun and make it behave completely differently. If you're looking for a sub-machine gun then use a 3 inch barrel. While, if you are looking for more of a sniper rifle, then choose a 22 inch barrel which will give you added distance and accuracy.

(2) Barrel rifling - Choose a barrel that is rifled, the type that have the straight grooves than run the length of the barrel. The straight groves help to keep the ball from spinning and maintain a more accurate trajectory.

(3) Fluted barrels - Consider a fluted barrel. Small holes are machined into the end of the barrel. They allow air to escape in front of the paintball as it is ejected. This reduces the drag and increases the speed, and hence the shooting distance.

(4) Paintball gun barrel materials:

Aluminum Marker Barrels - Budget barrels come in Aluminum. They are cheaper than other barrel materials. However, they do not need to be cleaned as often as their more expensive brass counterparts.

Brass Marker Barrels - These barrels give the gun a nice polished look. More expensive than aluminum barrels, then need to be cleaned more often and they create slightly more friction. The brass needs to be polished frequently to keep its luster.

Stainless Steel Marker Barrels- These are the highest quality barrels. They produce much lower friction, do not rust, and do not have to be cleaned as often. These barrels take the regular pounding of repeated use very well.

Upgrading your paintball gun barrel is one of the most effective ways to improve the performance of your gun. It is an easy, quick and relatively cheap way to enhance your paintball gun and can change the function of the gun and give it a new persona, be it a sniper rifle or a sub-machine gun.

Paintball gun barrels are constantly being improved and for a relatively low price can make a big difference to the performance of your paintball marker.
